Los lugares de la ciudad en inglés
Una ciudad tiene muchos lugares: a bank, a post office, a supermarket, a library, a museum y a park. Con go se usa to: I'm going to the bank, we go to the cinema on Saturdays.
Algunas palabras son distintas en el inglés británico y en el de Estados Unidos. La tienda de medicinas es chemist o pharmacy en el Reino Unido y pharmacy o drugstore en Estados Unidos. El cine es cinema en el inglés británico y movie theater en el de Estados Unidos. Un edificio grande con tiendas es shopping centre en el Reino Unido y mall en Estados Unidos.
Para decir dónde está un lugar, usa next to, opposite, between, near y on the corner. The post office is next to the bank. The library is opposite the park. The café is between the bank and the chemist. Between solo se usa con dos cosas.
En la calle puedes ver a corner, a bridge, traffic lights y a crossroads. Para explicar el camino, di: Turn left at the traffic lights. Stop at the crossroads.
Preguntas frecuentes
¿Qué diferencia hay entre chemist y pharmacy?
Las dos son tiendas de medicinas, es decir, farmacias. En el inglés británico se dice chemist o chemist's, y también pharmacy. En el inglés de Estados Unidos se dice pharmacy o drugstore.
¿Se dice cinema o movie theater?
Cinema es la palabra británica y movie theater es la palabra de Estados Unidos. Allí también se dice the movies: We are going to the movies.
¿Qué diferencia hay entre next to, opposite y between?
Next to significa al lado de algo. Opposite significa en el otro lado de la calle, enfrente. Between se usa con dos cosas: The café is between the bank and the chemist.
¿Se dice in the bank o at the bank?
Las dos son posibles. Usa at the bank para el lugar y lo que haces allí: I'm at the bank. Usa in the bank cuando estás dentro del edificio: There are a lot of people in the bank. Con go se usa to: I'm going to the bank.
¿Se dice shopping centre o mall?
Las dos significan centro comercial. Shopping centre es la palabra británica y mall es la de Estados Unidos. En Estados Unidos también se escribe center, no centre.
