Past Perfect Game: rules and examples

Past perfect uses had + past participle to look back from a past moment. It often makes the earlier event clear when two past events are mentioned. Hard questions add third conditionals, past perfect continuous and passive forms.

01

Build had + past participle

Had stays the same with every subject. Follow it with a past participle, including irregular forms such as seen, gone and written.

  • She had finished dinner.

    Had + finished.
  • Incorrect He had ate breakfast.

    Correct He had eaten breakfast.

    Eat has participle eaten.

02

The earlier of two past events

Past perfect often marks what happened before another past event; the later event usually uses past simple.

  • The train had left when we arrived.

    Leaving happened first.
  • I recognized her because I had met her before.

    Meeting came before recognizing.

03

Negatives and questions

Use had not or hadn't for negatives. Move had before the subject to form a question.

  • She hadn't seen the message.

    Negative past perfect.
  • Had you visited before?

    Question with had first.

04

By the time, already and duration

By the time places a past deadline. Already emphasizes completion before that point. Had been + -ing can emphasize duration up to it.

  • By noon, we had finished.

    Completed before noon.
  • They had been waiting for an hour when the bus came.

    Duration before the bus arrived.

05

Unreal past and passive

Third conditionals use had + participle in the if-clause. Past perfect passive uses had been + participle.

  • If I had known, I would have helped.

    Unreal past condition.
  • The bridge had been built by 2010.

    Past perfect passive.
