Privacy Policy

1. What we collect

Account data: name, e-mail address and a hashed password when you register.
Profile answers (optional): after you register, you can answer four questions: how you use the site, your level of English, why you are learning it (up to two reasons) and what you find hardest. Only the option you pick from a fixed list is stored, linked to your account. You can skip them, or change them later from My progress.
E-mail updates (optional): if you tick the box when you register, after the questions or in My progress, we keep your subscription and a record of your consent: the date, the exact text you agreed to, the language and where you gave it. Unsubscribing is recorded the same way. The box is never ticked for you.
Progress data: your answers and scores on exercises, linked to your account.
Usage data: our own usage statistics record which pages are viewed (the page address only, never the query string), the language of the page, when an exercise is completed or a word is marked as known, game starts (mode and difficulty), answers (correctness and topic tag), endings (score, number correct and answered), replays (including whether only mistakes were replayed), clicks to related exercises, clicks on the site's own buttons and links (a fixed name for each one, never what you typed), PDF downloads, book downloads (book, EPUB or PDF format, and estimated CEFR level), copies of the embed code, review rounds started and finished (number of questions and score), the level test (the first answer, the end of each stage with its score, and the recommended starting unit), checkpoint results (score, pass or fail, and the units to review), use of the free tools (which tool, the kind of result such as a year or a plural, whether it worked, listening to a result, trying an example, and printing a sheet with its type and its vocabulary topic or dictation set, and creating a dictation link — never what you type, the sentences of a dictation or your answers), when a partner advertisement is shown or clicked (campaign, variant and position), the website or campaign tag that brought you to us, when a message is sent through the contact form or the feedback button (only its type, never its text), and when an account is created or someone logs in. These records include a random identifier kept in your browser's session storage (it disappears when you close the tab) and, if you are logged in, are linked to your account. They do not include your IP address or browser identification. The best game score, recently played question IDs, and the advertisement variant shown to you and whether you closed it are kept only in local storage on this browser.
Technical data: essential cookies (to keep you signed in and remember your cookie notice choice) and anonymous usage analytics via Google Analytics.

2. How we use it

We use your data only to operate the service: signing you in, saving your progress, sending account e-mails (verification, password reset) and improving the site through aggregate analytics, such as which pages and exercises are used most and which need attention. We use the profile answers to suggest where to start and, added up across all accounts, to decide what to create next. E-mail updates (new exercises and free printable materials, at most one e-mail a month) are sent only to people who subscribed, and each one will include a link to unsubscribe. We do not sell personal data or use it for third-party advertising.

Some pages show advertisements for products of partners. They are marked as advertising and use affiliate links: if you buy after clicking, FluencyRoad may receive a commission, at no extra cost to you. Clicking takes you to a third-party website (today, Hotmart), which has its own privacy policy and is not covered by this one. The link carries a short code saying which advertisement position and variant it came from, with no information about you.

3. Cookies

Essential cookies are required for login and security and cannot be disabled. We also use Google Analytics with IP anonymization to measure site usage in aggregate; you can block it with a browser extension or by disabling third-party cookies in your browser settings. Our own usage statistics do not use cookies. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we honor it: no usage records are sent. This applies to our own statistics only, not to Google Analytics, which you can block as described above. Podcast episodes on our pages are YouTube videos in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Nothing is requested from YouTube, and no cookie is stored, until you press play; from then on Google’s own policy applies to that video. We record only which play or chapter button was pressed (never what you watch inside the video).

4. Embedded exercises

Other websites may embed our exercises via iframe. Embedded exercises do not use your FluencyRoad account and progress inside an embed is not linked to you. Anonymous views and completions of embedded exercises are counted in our usage statistics. This includes the address (domain only) of the website that shows the embedded exercise.

5. Messages and searches

What is stored: when you use the contact form or the feedback button, we store the text you write, the type (contact, error report or suggestion), the subject, the page you were on (the address only, never the query string) and the question number if you give one. We also store the name and e-mail address you type; if you are logged in, they are filled in from your account and the message is linked to it.
What for: to answer you and to correct the content. No e-mail is sent from the form: we read the messages in our admin area.
How long: 12 months, after which they are deleted automatically. You can ask for earlier deletion at hello@fluencyroad.com.
What is not stored: your IP address. It is used only to limit how many messages can be sent in an hour, and is not written down.

Searches: when you search the site, we store what you typed (up to 100 characters, with e-mail addresses and numbers of five or more digits replaced before saving), the language of the page, how many results it found, whether you opened the results page or picked a suggestion, and whether you were logged in. A search is not linked to your account, your browser session or your IP address. We use the searches, in aggregate, to see what learners look for and which content is missing. They are kept 12 months and then deleted automatically. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, searches are not stored.

6. Data retention and deletion

Your account data is kept while your account exists. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by e-mailing hello@fluencyroad.com. When an account is deleted, its usage records are kept but are no longer linked to any person. The record of your e-mail updates consent is kept while your account exists, as proof of that consent; you can unsubscribe at any time from My progress.

7. Your rights (GDPR/LGPD)

Depending on your location, you have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to withdraw consent. Contact us to exercise any of these rights.

8. Security

Passwords are stored hashed, connections use HTTPS in production, and access to personal data is restricted.
