English Level Test: Find Where to Start (A1–A2)
Do more with this exercise
How the level test works
This test has 40 short questions: two for each of the 20 course units, from A1 to A2. At the end it suggests a starting unit, or the highest checkpoint if every answer is right.
- Time:
- The test takes about 10 minutes. Answer with your own knowledge: do not use a dictionary or a translator, and do not worry if you do not know an answer.
- Your result:
- Your first weak unit is a suggested starting point, not proof that you know every earlier lesson. If you answer everything correctly, the result points you to the highest checkpoint.
- A guide, not an exact level:
- Two questions per unit is a quick check. If a unit seems too easy or too hard, you can start one unit earlier or later.
- No certificate:
- This test is free practice. It is not an official exam, and you do not get a certificate.
Examples
I am from Brazil. She is my sister.
A1: with the verb to be, we use am with I and is with he, she and it.

A1: in the present simple, the negative is don't or doesn't + verb.
I was watching TV when the phone rang.
A2: the past continuous shows the longer action, and the past simple shows the short action.
I have never eaten sushi.
A2: the present perfect talks about your experiences: have or has + past participle.
You mustn't park here.

Find your English level with a free test
Many people want to know where to start when they learn English. A level test gives you a quick answer. You answer a few questions, and the result shows what you already know and what to study next. This test is for beginners and elementary learners, the levels called A1 and A2.
The test has 40 questions, two for each unit of the FluencyRoad course. The A1 units go from the verb to be and the present simple to the past simple. The A2 units go from adverbs of manner, much and many to the present perfect, must and should, and words like and, but and because. There are four kinds of questions: multiple choice, fill in the blank, put the words in order, and true or false. After each question, you see the right answer and a short explanation.
At the end, the test looks at the units in the order of the course. The first unit with a missed question is a suggested place to start; earlier units may still be worth reviewing. If every answer is right, it suggests the highest checkpoint. Two questions per unit are only a quick check. You can take the test again later. It is free practice, and there is no certificate.

How long does the test take?
About 10 minutes. Each question is short, and you can answer it in less than a minute.
Do I get a certificate or an exact level?
No. This is free practice, not an official exam. It does not give you a certificate or an exact CEFR level. It only shows you a good place to start. For a certificate, you need an official English exam.
Do I need an account?

Can I take the test again?
Yes, as many times as you want. Take it again after some weeks of study to see what changed.
What if the unit I get is too easy or too hard?
