Talking about animals in English

We can put animals in groups. Pets live in our homes: a dog, a cat, a rabbit. Farm animals live on a farm: a cow, a pig, a horse. Wild animals live in nature: a lion, an elephant, a giraffe. Some animals live in the sea, like a whale and a dolphin.

Use a or an before one animal: a dog, an elephant. Most animals add -s in the plural: two cats, three horses. Sheep and fish are different: one sheep, two sheep, and one fish, two fish.

You can compare animals with comparative adjectives. An elephant is bigger than a horse. A giraffe is taller than an elephant. A horse is faster than a cow. Add -er to a short adjective and use than.

Talk about your own pets and the animals you like. Do you have a pet? What animals do you see at the zoo? Use the words and sentences on this page to answer.
