Use a ordem afirmativa dentro da pergunta

Uma pergunta indireta coloca uma pergunta dentro de uma expressão como Could you tell me...? A parte interna segue a ordem palavra interrogativa + sujeito + verbo. Para perguntas de sim ou não, use if ou whether.

Palavra interrogativa:
Direta: Where is the station? Indireta: Could you tell me where the station is?
Sem do na parte interna:
Direta: Where does she live? Indireta: Do you know where she lives? Retire does e use lives.
Pergunta de sim ou não:
Direta: Is the shop open? Indireta: Do you know if the shop is open? Use if ou whether.
Preserve o tempo:
Direta: When did they leave? Indireta: Could you tell me when they left? Mantenha o sentido de passado.
Pontuação:
Use ponto de interrogação se a frase inteira for pergunta: Can you tell me where it is? Em uma afirmação, use ponto: I know where it is.

Faça perguntas naturais e educadas

Uma pergunta direta é curta: *Where is the bank?* Em uma conversa, você pode usar uma introdução mais educada: *Could you tell me...?* A parte interna segue a ordem afirmativa: *Could you tell me where the bank is?* A frase inteira termina com ponto de interrogação.

Em perguntas de sim ou não, acrescente *if* ou *whether*: *Can you tell me if the bank is open?* Em perguntas com *do*, *does* ou *did*, retire esse auxiliar da parte interna e marque o tempo no verbo principal: *Do you know where she lives? Could you tell me when they left?*

Confira a parte interna separadamente. Depois da palavra interrogativa, o sujeito deve vir antes do verbo. Preserve o tempo original e verifique a pontuação da frase inteira: *I wonder where she lives* é afirmação; *Do you know where she lives?* é pergunta.

Perguntas frequentes

O que é uma pergunta indireta?

É uma pergunta dentro de uma expressão maior, muitas vezes para soar mais educado: *Could you tell me where the station is?*

Por que where the station is, e não where is the station?

A parte interna segue a ordem afirmativa: palavra interrogativa + sujeito + verbo. Apenas a introdução da pergunta tem ordem interrogativa.

Como fazer pergunta indireta de sim ou não?

Use *if* ou *whether* antes da parte interna: *Do you know if the shop is open?*

Mantenho did ou does na parte interna?

Geralmente não. *Where does she live?* vira *Do you know where she lives?*; *When did they leave?* vira *Do you know when they left?*
