O plural em inglês: regras e exceções

Substantivos nomeiam pessoas, animais e coisas. Um é singular; dois ou mais são plural. Em inglês, a maioria dos plurais recebe *-s*: *one book, two books; one car, three cars*.

O final da palavra ajuda a formar o plural. Depois de *s*, *x*, *ch* e *sh*, acrescente *-es*: *buses*, *boxes*, *watches*, *dishes*. Consoante + *y* vira *-ies*: *baby → babies*. Vogal + *y* recebe apenas *-s*: *boy → boys*.

Muitos substantivos em *f* ou *fe* mudam para *-ves*: *leaf → leaves*, *knife → knives*. Há plurais irregulares como *man → men*, *child → children* e *person → people*. *Fish* e *sheep* geralmente mantêm a forma.

Substantivos plurais pedem *are*, não *is*: *The children are at school*. *People* também é plural: *The people are nice*. Os exercícios acima praticam essas regras com frases curtas.

People é plural?

Sim. *People* é o plural de *person*: *The people are nice*. Em português, “a gente” é singular, mas *people* pede verbo plural.

Todo substantivo terminado em f ou fe vira -ves?

Não. Muitos mudam: *leaf → leaves*, *knife → knives*. Outros recebem apenas *-s*: *roof → roofs*.
