An adverb of manner tells us how someone does something: she speaks slowly, he drives carefully. Learn how to make it from an adjective, remember the irregular well, and put it in the right place in the sentence.

What adverbs of manner do

An adverb of manner says how an action is done. It goes with action verbs such as speak, drive, work, sing and run.

  • She speaks slowly.

    Slowly tells us how she speaks.
  • He drives carefully.

    Carefully tells us how he drives.
  • They work quietly.

    Quietly tells us how they work.

Adjective + ly

Add ly to the adjective to make the adverb. If the adjective ends in y, change y to ily.

  • slow becomes slowly

    Add ly.
  • The children play happily.

    Happy becomes happily.
  • Incorrect I can do it easyly.

    Correct I can do it easily.

    Easy becomes easily.

Good or well?

Good is an adjective and describes a noun. Well is the adverb and describes a verb.

  • He is a good singer.

    Good describes the noun singer.
  • Incorrect He sings good.

    Correct He sings well.

    Well describes the verb sings.
  • She cooks very well.

    Very comes before well.

Fast, hard and early

Fast, hard and early have the same form as an adjective and as an adverb. Do not add ly. Hardly is a different word: it means almost not.

  • Incorrect Ana runs fastly.

    Correct Ana runs fast.

    Fast is the adverb.
  • Sam works hard.

    Hard is the adverb.
  • I can hardly hear you.

    Hardly means almost not.

Word order and adjective or adverb

Put the adverb after the verb, or after the object. Do not put it between the verb and the object. After be, use an adjective.

  • Incorrect She speaks well English.

    Correct She speaks English well.

    The adverb goes after the object.
  • He speaks slowly.

    There is no object, so the adverb follows the verb.
  • Incorrect The test is easily.

    Correct The test is easy.

    After be, use the adjective easy.
