Zero and First Conditional Game: rules and examples

Use if to describe general patterns or a possible future. The zero conditional uses the present simple in both parts for facts or regular results. The first conditional uses if + present simple and will + base verb for a possible future.

01

Zero conditional: facts and regular results

Use the present simple in both parts for facts and regular results. A personal habit can also be described this way; it does not have to be true for everyone.

  • If you heat ice, it melts.

    A fact.
  • If you don't sleep, you feel tired.

    Negative if part.

02

First conditional: possible future

Use if + present simple, then will + base verb for something that is possible in the future.

  • If I have time tomorrow, I will call you.

    Will + base verb.
  • If it rains, we will stay at home.

    A possible future.

03

No will after if

Do not put will in the if part. Use the present simple there.

  • Incorrect If it will rain, we will stay at home.

Correct If it rains, we will stay at home.

    Present simple after if.

04

Negatives and questions

Use don't or doesn't in the if part and won't in the result. In a question, will comes after the question word.

  • If it is cold, we won't go to the beach.

    Won't = will not.
  • What will you do if you miss the bus?

    Will after what.

05

Comma and short forms

Write a comma after the if part when it comes first. If it comes second, write no comma. In speaking, I will becomes I'll.

  • If it snows, we will make a snowman.

    If part first: comma.
  • We will make a snowman if it snows.

    If part second: no comma.
  • If you are hungry, I'll make you a sandwich.

    I'll = I will.

FAQ

Is this zero and first conditional game free?

Yes. Play as many short rounds as you like without creating an account.

What is the difference between the zero and the first conditional?

The zero conditional uses the present simple in both parts for a fact or regular result. The first conditional describes a possible future and uses will in the result.

Why can't I say if it will rain?

After if, English uses the present simple even when the idea is about the future: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.

Do I need a comma?

Write a comma after the if part when it comes first. If the if part comes second, there is no comma.

Can I use this game in class?

Yes. Ask pairs to finish sentences that begin with If it rains tomorrow or If I have time on Saturday, then compare them with the game.

Does the game save my score?

Your best Challenge score is stored in this browser, not in your account.
