Prepositions Game: rules and examples

Prepositions of place tell us where something is in relation to something else. This prepositions game starts with in, on and under, then moves to between, opposite and directions through a place. Every question uses an English sentence with clues about the position or movement.

01

In, on and under

Use in for something within a space, on for contact with a surface, and under for a lower position, often directly beneath another object.

  • The keys are in the drawer.

    The drawer contains the keys.
  • The cup is on the table.

The cup touches the table's surface.
  • The cat is under the chair.

The cat is below the chair.

02

Between, among and next to

Between identifies a position relative to distinct things, often two. Among places something within a group. Next to means immediately beside.

  • The café is between the bank and the library.

Two named buildings mark its position.
  • She stood among the crowd.

    People surrounded her.
  • The bike is next to the car.

    They are side by side.

03

In front of, behind, above and opposite

In front of and behind describe the front and back of something. Above means at a higher level. Opposite means facing something across a road or open space.

  • The garden is behind the house.

    It is at the back.
  • The lamp hangs above the table.

It is higher without touching the table.
  • The bank is opposite the station.

They face each other across the road.

04

At a point, in an area

Use at for a named point such as an entrance or the end of a street. Use in for being within an area such as a park or town centre.

  • Meet me at the entrance.

The entrance is a specific point.
  • The library is in the town centre.

    It is within that area.

05

Movement: into, onto, across and through

Into ends inside a place; onto ends on a surface. Across goes from one side of an open area to the other, while through follows a route inside a tunnel, forest or crowd.

  • Incorrect The cat jumped into the table.

Correct The cat jumped onto the table.

Its movement ended on the surface.
