Reading text

When Leo started at his new school in September, everything felt
unfamiliarnew and not known to you
.
He used to walk to his old school in five minutes, but the new one was across town. Now he had to take a bus, and he was not used to getting up before seven. On the first day, he missed his stop and arrived just as the bell was ringing. His new
classmatesstudents in the same class as you
already knew one another, so lunch felt especially lonely.
Leo sat with his
traya flat object used to carry food and drinks
near the window and watched other students talk.
A teacher called Ms Brown noticed him and invited him to join the school newspaper. Leo used to write short stories at home, but he had never written a report. At first, he was nervous about
interviewingasking people questions to learn about them
strangers.
The other students showed him how to ask clear questions and check
factspieces of information that are true
.
After a few weeks, he started getting used to speaking to strangers. He wrote an article about the school garden and its vegetables for a local
food banka place that gives food to people who need it
.
In November, the newspaper team visited the
food banka place that gives food to people who need it
.
Amira, a
volunteera person who helps without being paid
, described the families in need.
He used to think the garden was only a nice place to spend time outside. Now he understood that the work there mattered to people beyond the school. His article included Amira’s words and a picture of the students with boxes. When the paper came out, several
classmatesstudents in the same class as you
thanked Leo for telling the story.
Leo is used to the early bus now, but he still checks the stop twice. He has also got used to eating lunch with the newspaper team. The school no longer feels like a place full of strangers. Next term, Leo wants to help new students find a suitable club. He remembers how difficult his first weeks were and how one
invitationan offer to join or do something
changed them.
He still writes stories at home, but he is learning to write about real people too.
