How to spell your name in English
“How do you spell that?” is one of the first questions in any phone call or form. Say the name of each letter, not its sound: E-M-M-A is “ee, double em, ay”. Two same letters together are usually said “double”: double M, double L, double seven. Learn the names in the alphabet and spelling lesson.
E-mail addresses and codes
Read @ as “at” and the full stop as “dot”: ana.lima@mail.com is “a-n-a dot l-i-m-a at mail dot com”. A hyphen is “dash” and _ is “underscore”. Digits are said one by one: seven, two, double zero.
The NATO alphabet
On a bad phone line, letters such as B, D, P and T sound alike. The NATO phonetic alphabet gives each letter a word: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta. Say “B as in Bravo” or just “Bravo” and nobody will mishear you.
For Spanish and Portuguese speakers the hardest letters are A, E and I, which swap sounds (E is said like a Spanish I), and G and J. The tool marks them. Practise introducing yourself in the introductions lesson.
Frequently asked questions

Americans say “zee” and British speakers say “zed”. The tool uses zee by default and has a switch for zed.

How do you read an e-mail address aloud?
Say @ as “at”, the full stop as “dot”, - as “dash” and _ as “underscore”. Spell the parts that are not common words.
Is what I type sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent or stored. The audio is a set of short recordings of each letter, the same for everyone.
