Verb To Be Game: rules and examples

The verb to be changes form with its subject: I am, she is, they are. Unlike most English verbs, be forms questions and negatives without do or does. This game starts in the present and later reviews was/were, will be and has/have been.

01

Affirmative: am, is, are

Use am with I, is with singular third-person subjects, and are with you, we, they and plural subjects.

  • I am ready.

    I + am.
  • She is ready.

    She + is.
  • They are ready.

    They + are.

02

Negatives and contractions

Put not directly after be. Common contractions are is not → isn't, are not → aren't and I am not → I'm not.

  • She isn't late.

    Is + not.
  • We aren't late.

    Are + not.
  • I'm not late.

    I am not.

03

Questions and short answers

Move be before the subject to form a question. Repeat be in a short answer; do and does are unnecessary.

  • Is she here? Yes, she is.

    Is moves before she.
  • Are they ready? No, they aren't.

    Are moves before they.
  • Incorrect Does he is at home?

    Correct Is he at home?

    Be makes the question itself.

04

Past: was and were

Use was with I/he/she/it and singular nouns, and were with you/we/they and plural nouns. Move was or were before the subject in questions.

  • I was there yesterday.

    I + was.
  • They were there yesterday.

    They + were.
  • Were you there yesterday?

    Question with were.

05

Other forms of be

After will, use be. Present perfect uses has/have been. In formal hypothetical if-clauses, were works with every subject.

  • She will be here tomorrow.

    Will + be.
  • They have been there twice.

    Have + been.
  • If I were you, I would ask.

    Hypothetical were.
