Have Got: Talk About Your Things and Your Family
We use have got to talk about our things and our family: I've got a bike. We've got a big family. We also use it to say what people look like: she's got long hair, he's got brown eyes. That is why it is a good verb for describing people.
Have got has two forms. Use have got with I, you, we and they. Use has got with he, she, it and one person or thing: my brother has got a dog. In speaking, we often use the short forms: I've got, you've got, she's got, he's got.
For the negative, put not after have or has: I haven't got a car. He hasn't got a sister. For a question, put have or has first, and got after the person: Have you got a pen? Has she got blue eyes? In a short answer, do not use got: Yes, I have. No, she hasn't.
Be careful with 's. It can mean has or is. He's got a car means he has got a car. He's tall means he is tall. If got comes after 's, it is has.
Have got is very common in British English. In American English, people often say have, and they make questions like Do you have a pen? You learn this form later, with the present simple. The exercises above practice have got and has got in affirmative sentences, negatives, questions and short answers.
