How to say years, dates and prices in English

Learners rarely need to read out a plain number like 1,250,000. What they struggle with are years, dates and prices. How do you say 1984, 2008 or 2026? How do you read 15/03/2026 aloud? What does “twelve fifty” mean on a menu? This converter answers each of those. Pick what you want to say, type it, and the result shows the words, the shorter way people really say it and, when your device has an English voice, a play button.

Years

Up to 1999, say a year as two pairs of digits: 1984 is “nineteen eighty-four” and 1066 is “ten sixty-six”. The round years use “hundred”: 1900 is “nineteen hundred”. A zero in the middle becomes “oh”: 1905 is “nineteen oh five”.

From 2000 to 2009 the usual form is “two thousand” plus the last digit: 2008 is “two thousand eight”, and British speakers often add “and”. From 2010 most people split the year in two again, “twenty ten” and “twenty twenty-six”, although “two thousand twenty-six” is also correct.

Dates and prices

In American English the month comes first, so 05/03/2026 is May 3. In British English the day comes first, so it is 5 March. Said aloud, an American says “March fifth, twenty twenty-six” and a British speaker says “the fifth of March”. Use ordinal numbers (first, second, third) for the day, never “five”. To say when something happens, use the prepositions in, on and at: in May, on May 5th, at five o’clock. When you write for readers from different countries, write the month as a word.

Prices are often shortened: $3.99 is “three ninety-nine” and £12.50 is “twelve fifty”. The long form, “twelve pounds and fifty pence”, belongs to cheques and formal writing.

Big numbers and common mistakes

Hundred, thousand and million never take an s after a number: say “two hundred”, not “two hundreds”. English separates thousands with a comma (1,250,000) and uses a point for decimals (1.5, said “one point five”). A billion is a thousand million, the Spanish “mil millones”. British English adds “and” after hundreds (“one hundred and one”); American English usually leaves it out. For clock times, see our lesson on telling the time.

Frequently asked questions

How do you say 2026 in English?

Most people say “twenty twenty-six”. “Two thousand twenty-six” is also correct. Years from 2000 to 2009 are normally “two thousand” plus the last digit, as in “two thousand eight”.

How do you read a date like 05/03/2026?

It depends on the country. In the United States it is May 3, 2026 (month/day/year). In the United Kingdom and most of the world it is 5 March 2026 (day/month/year). Write the month as a word if you are not sure who will read it.

Do I say “and” in numbers like 101?

In British English, yes: “one hundred and one”. American English normally drops it: “one hundred one”. Both are understood everywhere, so choose one and be consistent.
