Numbers in English: the easy way to learn 0 to 100

Numbers are everywhere: prices, ages, phone numbers, buses. The good news is that you only need about 30 words for every number from 0 to 100. Learn 0 to 20, then the tens (thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety) and one hundred.

The numbers from 13 to 19 end in -teen: thirteen, fourteen, fifteen. The tens end in -ty: thirty, forty, fifty. Some numbers change a little: three becomes thirteen and thirty, five becomes fifteen and fifty, and two becomes twenty. Learn these in pairs.

For 21 to 99, put the ten and the small number together with a hyphen: twenty-one, sixty-seven, ninety-nine. There is no and in the middle. For ages, say I am twenty-one or I am twenty-one years old.

Two things are easy to get wrong. First, the spelling of forty: no u. Second, the sound of pairs like fifteen and fifty: the strong part is at the end of fifteen and at the start of fifty. Do the exercises above to practise both.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write the numbers from 21 to 99 in English?

Say the ten, then the number from 1 to 9, with a hyphen (-) in the middle: twenty-one (21), thirty-five (35), forty-two (42), ninety-nine (99). Do not use and: 21 is twenty-one, not twenty and one.

Is it forty or fourty?

Forty. Four (4) and fourteen (14) have a u, but forty (40) does not. Fourty is a very common spelling mistake.

How can I hear the difference between fifteen and fifty?

Listen for the strong part of the word. In fifteen (15), the strong part is at the end: fif-TEEN. In fifty (50), the strong part is at the start: FIF-ty. It is the same for 13 and 30, 14 and 40, up to 19 and 90.

Do I say a hundred or one hundred?

Both are correct for 100. A hundred is very common in speaking. One hundred is common in writing and when the number is important, like prices.

How do you say 0 in English?

Zero is the usual word. In phone numbers, many people say oh, like the letter O: 305 is three-oh-five.

Do numbers take a plural -s?

The thing after the number takes -s: two books, ten dollars. The number word does not: one hundred, not one hundreds.
