Days, months and dates in English

There are seven days in a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday and Sunday are the weekend. There are twelve months in a year, from January to December, and four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Days and months are names in English, so they always start with a capital letter: Monday, May. Seasons are not names, so they start with a small letter: summer, winter.

Use on with days and dates: on Monday, on the fifth of May. Use in with months and seasons: in May, in summer. For something you do every week, add an s to the day: I play football on Saturdays.

For dates, English uses ordinal numbers: first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), fourth (4th) and so on. Look at the end of the number: 21st, 22nd, 23rd, but 11th, 12th and 13th. Say the date like this: the twenty-first of June, or June twenty-first in American English.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Always write Monday, Friday, January, May and the other days and months with a capital letter, also in the middle of a sentence. The seasons are different: spring, summer, autumn and winter start with a small letter.
