Plural Nouns Game: rules and examples

A plural noun means more than one. Most nouns add -s, some add -es or change -y to -ies, and some are irregular.

01

Add -s

Add -s to most nouns: book, books; boy, boys.

  • Two books are on the table.

    Books is plural.

02

Add -es

After -s, -x, -ch and -sh, add -es: bus, buses; box, boxes; watch, watches; dish, dishes. Some nouns that end in -o also add -es: tomato, tomatoes.

  • She has two watches.

    Watches ends in -es.

03

Consonant + y

When a noun ends in consonant + y, change the y to -ies: city, cities; baby, babies. After a vowel + y, add only -s: boy, boys.

  • I like big cities.

    City becomes cities.

04

Irregular plurals

Some nouns change in a special way: child, children; man, men; woman, women; foot, feet; tooth, teeth; person, people; knife, knives. Sheep stays the same: one sheep, two sheep.

  • Three children are in the garden.

Children is the plural of child.

FAQ

Why do some plurals not end in -s?

Some very common English nouns are irregular. They come from older forms of English, so you learn them one by one: child, children; man, men; foot, feet.

Is it persons or people?

People is the normal plural of person in everyday English. Persons is formal and rare, so use people at this level.

How do I say the -es ending?

After a hissing sound the ending is a separate syllable: bus, buses; box, boxes; watch, watches.

Can I use this game in class?
